Oct. 19, 2012 — Using vast amounts of data to track the spread of Aedes aegypti, a mosquito that spreads the dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever viruses, the University of Florida has produced the most detailed global map of this mosquito to date. The finding that global urbanization is closely tied to the presence of Ae. aegypti suggests that education, vector control and public health interventions can be addressed more effectively if local prevalence is known. “We’re finding that these mosquitoes are appearing on or near the West Coast for the first time,” said Dave Whiteman, an entomologist at the University of Florida. “This is the first time that we’ve found them this far north and west,” he said. But researchers are more concerned with whether the spread of the mosquito is accelerating, following the global boom in urbanization over the past half century. “The majority of these mosquitoes are, in our urbanized areas, found in polluted water containers,” Whiteman said. “This means that the containers used for drinking water in homes and for other water-related activities are also breeding grounds for the mosquitoes.” The maps were developed with the help of John Njiru, an M.S. candidate in biological sciences at the University of Florida.
