His first part had to be hand drawn by a design engineer. This design engineer drew the part on a paper template that would be scanned, and then turned around and sent back to the designer, who would use the scanned drawing to cut the part. When I first began working on the car industry, many new designers would just throw something together on a paper template, draw it in their favorite CAD program, and then have the sheet sent back to the manufacturer to get printed. The way my dad designed the first part is what I would call a traditional approach—things are printed out and then scanned, and then a designer spends weeks or months in a CAD program making changes to the part in order to get everything just right. However, we’ve come a long way in the last few years. Design engineers now have access to powerful, easy-to-use 3D design programs that allow them to create their own customized parts in a matter of minutes. My dad has never been a computer guy, so he was always very slow in learning and applying CAD programs to his design process. He always asked me to help him learn CAD, but it wasn’t until I got my own computer workstation at work that I could take on this task. I came into my job with some basic CAD knowledge, but I had never designed a part before. However, I wanted to find out how design engineers could simplify the design process and become more efficient. AutoCAD and other CAD programs allow you to create parts in a 3D modeling environment.
