So, how to meet someone—and even if you’re already dating someone—without making it all seem too urgent? We asked Fookes (they’re our copywriters, not a dating service) to tell us their best advice for dating when the clock is ticking. And here’s what they had to say: Stay in Touch Dating is meant to be fun. Make sure you let your partner know you’re free to hang out or go for a drink whenever you both want. Life’s too short to be with someone who always has other things going on. Plus, if you always have a reason to be on the other end of the phone, you’re always that much easier to get out of. Don’t Be A Stranger One day you wake up and realize that the person who you’d been seeing for four or five years is actually a stranger. This isn’t the worst thing to happen, but it’s inevitable, so be prepared. If your date just isn’t working, it’s not because you’re not perfect. You’re probably great, even if it isn’t on the surface. If you can’t overcome this hurdle, then it’s probably time to let go. Be Present If you’re trying to meet someone, you’re probably busy trying to figure out how you’d respond if they asked you out, or if they’d ever ask you. And while that’s normal, try to make sure you’re actually with them. Make time for date nights, no matter what. Maybe you and your guy or girlfriend are trying to get serious. Maybe you just want to go out for a drink and have some fun. Whatever the case may be, just make sure that you’re there. Break the Ice Sometimes your date just clicks, and you know right off the bat you’re going to be friends with each other. But it can also go the other way, and that’s okay too. If you just met, do whatever you’d normally do to make the date more comfortable. You can usually check a few things off your list of things you’re curious about, like their interests and family. If you don’t feel comfortable asking anything or you don’t feel a connection, you don’t have to. Make It Easy You’re going on a date with someone, but you still have to go to the gym and have dinner ready, so you can’t just run out. However, don’t push too hard.
Note: This post was originally published in May 2015. We’ve updated it with new information from dating apps such as Tinder and OKCupid, as well as information from the New York Times, and some new apps that are releasing to the public in 2015. Getting Started 1. Have a Plan If you’re new to Tinder or your attempt at a relationship, keep in mind that today’s speed dating apps are different than they used to be. Back in the 90’s, you’d be lucky if you got three minutes of chat with someone on a basic dating app. Now, guys have to pick up a girl within 30 seconds to one minute, and I’ll be your hat. The better you prepare yourself, the better your odds. Does this sound harsh? Remember that in the past, your only means of seeing a new potential mate was through profile pictures, brief bios, and maybe a cheeky message. In today’s app, you can pick up the person’s location by looking at the little’ready’ bubble on their profile. You can speak with them for 10 to 20 seconds. Back in the day, you could say ‘Hi, how are you’ and receive a one-word response. Today, you have to reel them in so they’ll give you more of their profile. Since you have to pick up a girl so fast, you need to do your research. Use some of the tips and tricks mentioned below so you have a chance to make a good impression and improve your odds of success. 2. Tailor Your Profile to Your Situation The key to getting a date is to tailor your profile to the situation. If you’re playing the field, change up your profile. Download Snapchat, Tinder, Plenty Of Fish, and other apps to have fun and meet people—use the app to your advantage. Playing the field is overrated, but if you have some experience, try and be a little more creative. Think about whether you’re looking for a casual hookup, a person who is like you, a girlfriend, a long-term partner, or marriage. Make your profile reflect that. If you’re looking for a long-term relationship, don’t take it too personally. If you meet some really great people, you may have a chance to find a like-minded person, but if you meet someone who is a jerk, you’ll need to cut your losses. If you’re looking for a hookup, go for the
